Demonstration and experimentation

As a way to explore and envisage the future, new solutions to challenges of energy, mobility, food or water are often demonstrated or experimented at a project scale. These projects are particularly prevalent in, but not limited to, urban environments. For city planners and developers, it is important to be able to exemplify how societal and political goals can be achieved. Through demonstration projects they can experiment with future solutions in the present, and visualise future worlds.

Demonstrations and experimentations rely on narratives. To gain impact, they need to tell compelling stories about alternative modes of living. Looking at examples from Skåne in particular (e.g. Brunnshög in Lund, Hyllie in Malmö) we discuss different ways in which demonstrations can address challenges in a carbon constrained world.
